Since Desmond’s move to Ireland we have been able to make several visits, combining our time with seeing relatives. Desmond had completely settled in his new home and as ever, looked forward rather than backward. Though his health fluctuated his spirits were never low. On our last visit in February he was in flying form with his customary enthusiasm.
On what was to be our last meeting in February we had joined Richard Gault of the Redfern Gallery at DIVA (Dun Laoghaire Institute of Visual Arts) for an exhibition of 98 paintings created in his 98th year. Desmond had travelled to Dun Laoghaire for the Exhibition but showed no sign of tiredness, greeting us warmly and delighted in the bustle of the occasion. The following day, at the invitation of Annie (daughter in law) we and Richard met for tea at Desmond’s home. Desmond welcomed us, sitting at his table, which was covered with a fine selection of his recent books. Nearly all published by Neil Coombs, of the Dark Windows Press. We were asked to help ourselves to any book that was missing from our shelves.
Having been in regular contact over the next couple of months Desmond’s health deteriorated and he was admitted to hospital in Naas but continued in his emails to express his frustration at having an unfinished painting on his easel!
Over so many years of professional and personal friendship there is now a gap in our lives, but, we are looking forward to an
exhibition to be held in the autumn at the Redfern Gallery, in their new premises at 11-12 Pall Mall, an exhibition of Desmond’s more recent work
